Fed: Downer welcomes nuclear watchdog decision
Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER has welcomed a decision to refer North Korea's nuclearprogram to the United Nations Security Council.
The UN's International Atomic Energy Agency has passed a resolution declaring NorthKorea in breach of UN safeguards and has sent the issue to the Security Council.
As one of the 35 members of the nuclear watchdog's governing board, Mr DOWNER saysAustralia supports the decision.
He says addressing North Korea's non-compliance with nuclear safeguards under the nuclearnon-proliferation treaty demands the highest international attention.
Tensions are on the boil between North Korea and the US over the Stalinist state'sresumption of a nuclear program and its threats of pre-emptive strikes against the USand its allies.
