NSW:Stockbroker robbed us 'in cold blood'
By Britt Smith
SYDNEY, Aug 19 AAP - An elderly Sydney society stockbroker who "in cold blood" stole
almost $4 million from friends and clients over a decade has been jailed for at least
two years.
In sentencing Robert Blanshard, 81, on Friday, NSW District Court Judge Anthony Garling
said the offender was once a highly-respected man who breached the trust of his victims,
some who he had known for much of his life.
Blanshard, labelled a "crook" by his wife, pleaded guilty in April to fraudulently
misappropriating $3.9 million from three clients and a company over a number of years.
Among them were Bill Friend, Anthony Grigor-Scott - a former student of Blanshard's
in the 1950s - and the company Idlebase, of which he was the director and sole shareholder.
He also admitted to robbing three other long-term friends and associates.
Victim Jeff Conen - who first met Blanshard while a student at the Shore Church of
England grammar school in North Sydney - lost $272,000.
"I didn't think he had the ability to sit down and, in cold blood, plan those enormous
thefts, year in year out," Mr Conen said outside court.
"Your faith in human nature was the loss, not the financial loss."
In 2008, Mr Conen went to Blanshard's house to inquire about his investment. Blanshard
had no answers, saying that he'd had to live with this for 20 years.
His wife said: "I used to wonder why he spent all weekend with a great list of figures.
Now I know why. We are left with nothing."
"The saddest thing is, out son and daughter and grandchildren will know their grandfather
is a crook," she said.
Blanshard filed for bankruptcy in March 2009, with creditors owed a total of $5.5 million.
The judge said Blanshard blamed his offending on financial troubles sparked by the
Lloyd's of London disaster, his wife losing $700,000, and a significant downturn on the
stockmarket.
"It got out of hand," the judge said.
"He knew he could not pay back the money, but he kept taking it. It escalated from
there. To repay the monies, he took other monies."
Blanshard used some of the cash on his lifestyle, although his son previously told
the court his father did not live or seek the high life.
According to references, Blanshard was highly respected in the community, having taught
at Shore and sitting on its council into the 1990s. He then became a stockbroker, advising
many of his friends who "obviously totally trusted him," the judge said.
In sentencing him to a maximum of six years with a two-year non-parole period, the
judge took into account his age and poor health.
One doctor concluded Blanshard was suffering from Alzheimer's disease and would die
from terminal dementia within ten years.
The judge also noted Blanshard had expressed a deep sense of guilt and regret.
Chris Harrington, who has known Blanshard since 1976 and lost $108,000, said he felt
the sentence was fair and justified.
"This person stole from a number of people, it was deliberate," he said.
"It was a shocking thing to do, a complete breach of trust."

NT: Aboriginal ingredients meet western cooking
By Tara Ravens
DARWIN, Feb 23 AAP - Imagine a backyard stocked with every delicacy you could imagine.
No shops, no queuing, no checkout chicks. Just aisles of tall trees packed with bush
berries and witchetty grubs.
Across Northern Australia - from Arnhem Land to the Red Centre - the larder is always

Learning from locals, celebrity chef Steve Sunk has foraged through this outdoor pantry,
applying western styles of cooking to the most unlikely of ingredients.

SYDNEY, April 23 AAP - The Australian on Saturday says infamous as it's become, it
was too much to hope that Larissa Behrendt's tweet comparing the heartfelt comments of
Bess Price unfavourably with televised bestiality would be an isolated indiscretion. Readers
and contributors to The Australian overwhelmingly supported Price, an Aboriginal community
leader from central Australia whose stated agenda is to improve the lot of indigenous
people. But, predictably, activists have ignored the substance and directed their fury
at this newspaper for having the temerity to publish the story. Using a post-modern political
map, any view challenging their own is labelled "right wing" and their own fringe positions
are treated as mainstream. Yet in the real world there is virtual political bi-partisanship
between Labor and the Coalition to learn from past mistakes and find meaningful solutions.
The Oz in its second editorial says whatever our beliefs about a young Jewish man from
Nazareth who was crucified outside Jerusalem 2000 years ago and whose two billion followers
today continue to believe he rose from the dead, the Easter message of redemption and
fresh hope remains as important as ever in the 21st century. In Australia and New Zealand,
the season is especially poignant this year, coinciding with Anzac Day on Monday, when
we pay tribute to those whose heroic sacrifices benefit the greater good and reaffirm
our belief in allies working in unity towards a safer, more peaceful world.
On Saturday the Sydney Morning Herald says though China, Japan and South Korea are
all valued and important diplomatic and trade partners for Australia, Julia Gillard's
visits to the three north-east Asian countries are taking place in the right order. Making
Japan the first stop was the correct choice for the Prime Minister.
There had been a lingering concern that the Labor government was overlooking the quiet,
longstanding friendship of this ally in the excitement of the China boom, and the broad
strengths of the relationship, overshadowed by the emotion of the whaling issue. Now Japan
is a nation shaken by the impact of the catastrophic tsunami and the struggle to contain
radioactive material from the destroyed nuclear reactors at Fukushima. Australia, with
many other countries, quickly contributed what it could to the rescue and relief operations.
With an exodus of many foreigners from Tokyo and subdued commercial activity, Gillard's
visit seems to have been seen by her Japanese counterpart, Naoto Kan, as a gesture of
confidence that the crisis is being managed, that Tokyo is safe, and Japan is not fundamentally
damaged.
The SMH in its second editorial says let's face it about Donald Trump. He's got the
readies, about $US600 million of his $US2.7 billion fortune. He's got the comb-over.
He has jumped to the front in the early race for next year's Republican presidential
nomination, outstripping the Tea Party favourite Sarah Palin. So there are doubters, like
the comedian Chris Rock (''I won't vote for him, I'm afraid he'll leave us for a younger,
prettier country.'') But when the other front runner, the former Arkansas governor Mike
Huckabee, calls for Julian Assange to be executed and says Obama was tutored by the Mau-Mau
in a mythical childhood in Kenya, we are starting to know what ''race to the bottom''
really means.
Sydney's The Daily Telegraph says something seems to have got into NSW local councils
lately. Not content with their already difficult responsibilities regarding roads, municipal
services and parks, certain councils appear more inclined to take on global issues.
Recently we've seen Marrickville Council making national news because of its quixotic
attempt to ban everything associated with Israel from the area.
Now we have Parramatta City Council commissioning an extraordinary report into how
best local councils can survive global warming.
What they need are councils that focus on rational local issues and solutions.
The Tele in its second editorial says we should never forget, however, that our police
are also human beings. They have limits. Anyone with friends or family who serve in the
force will know of the extreme stress that police routinely endure.
We saw a glimpse of that stress yesterday as Detective Inspector Russell Oxford answered
media questions about the tragic death of Kiesha Abrahams, whose remains were found early
Friday morning in Shalvey.
The entire state knows how he feels. We're on your side,
On Saturday the Herald Sun says rioters at Sydney's Villawood detention centre would
appear to have achieved what the divisive debate in the Federal Parliament has failed
to resolve. Bipartisanship, once the solid policy on which immigration was based, came
about after days of rioting in which millions of dollars worth of damage was caused by
rampaging asylum seekers.
But there is a very long way to go in resolving what has become a disaster for the
soft policies of the Gillard Government following a similar riot and damage at the detention
centre at Christmas Island last month.
At least Immigration Minister Chris Bowen and the Opposition are one in condemning
the Villawood rioters, many of whom had already had their applications for refugee status
rejected and are trying to turn public opinion in their favour.
The Government and Opposition must work together to find a solution to what has become
a major issue involving thousands of asylum seekers who find themselves encouraged to
sail here by policies that have lost the confidence of fair-minded Australians.
Melbourne's The Age says the full-forward marks the ball and prepares to kick what
may be the first goal of the match. Around the ground there is a hush as supporters of
both sides wait to see whether the full-forward's side will take the lead or whether he
will kick another behind, levelling the scores. Everything hangs on what he will do. As
The Saturday Age has revealed, however, what ''everything'' means in such a situation
is in danger of changing. As betting on AFL football - already worth $300 million a year
- continues to surge, whether, and when, goals are scored not only affects the hopes of
a club and its supporters for victory, but punters' chances of earning big money. Sports
betting is an increasingly enticing form of gambling, and a potential source of corruption
for the game.
Betting on the outcome of a sporting fixture is part of the Australian way of life,
and unexpected results are part of the pleasure of sport. But the second of these things
is not supposed to result from the first. Sports administrators must do everything possible
to ensure that it remains that way.
Brisbane's The Courier Mail says Easter, at its very essence, is about the themes of
death and rebirth.
It is also a good time to give thanks for the sort of society that we belong to. We
have plenty to complain about in our daily lives - the grind of work, the rising cost
of living, the travails of friends and family. Ultimately though, as was demonstrated
during our summer of adversity, we have much to be grateful for, and every reason to remain
hopeful of a brighter future. And that, most certainly, is one of the most important themes
of this time of year. So a happy, thoughtful and safe Easter to all our readers.

FED:Warning issued over imported crumbed fish
By Danny Rose, AAP Medical Writer
SYDNEY, Feb 1 AAP - Australians with peanut allergy have been warned to not eat imported
crumbed fish or seafood products, following a rash of product recalls and six people falling
seriously ill.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) issued a general warning on Tuesday, based
on ongoing concerns over a batch of Chinese-made flour used in the preparation of imported
fish products.
The six people - four from Victoria and one each from WA and Queensland - all ate types
of imported crumbed fish or seafood which contained undisclosed traces of peanut.
Each had their emergency adrenaline injection at hand to manage their allergic reaction,
and only one required a trip to hospital.
"FSANZ today advised Australians with peanut allergies not to eat imported crumbed
fish, and crumbed seafood, products that could be contaminated with undeclared peanuts,"
FSANZ chief executive Steve McCutcheon said in a statement on Tuesday.
"The source of the peanuts has been traced to soy flour manufactured in China.
"FSANZ has been advised that since the discovery of the contamination, the distributor
is no longer using the soy flour from the manufacturer responsible."
A spate fish products, sold via the nation's major supermarkets and known to contain
the suspect flour, were recalled during January but there is a risk the products may still
remain in household freezers.
Mr McCutcheon said the products otherwise "do not pose a safety risk for people who
do not have a peanut allergy".
FSANZ was working with retailers, manufacturers, importers and overseas food regulators
to identify if any other products may be affected, he said.
Any further cases of food allergic people falling ill as a result of imported crumbed
fish should be reported to state or territory health authorities.
The recalled products are:
- Coles Frozen Crumbed Lemon Flavoured Fish Fillets.
- Woolworths Home Brand Lemon Flavoured Crumbed Fish Frozen Portions sold in NSW, ACT
and Queensland.
- Coles Crumbed Black Oreodory Fillets in Light Crispy Breadcrumbs, recalled on January 29.
- Three further frozen crumbed seafood products sold through Woolworths/Safeway, Coles,
Bi-Lo, Metcash and IGA, Pick'n'Pay (QLD) and Franklins (NSW).

Senator Faulkner said the latest casualty would likely raise questions about Australia's

"This soldier, and his fellow soldiers have been doing the difficult, but essential
work of training and mentoring the Afghan national Army."
Threats to national security "are not defeated by distance", he said.
"The work of protecting our community must include preventing Afghanistan from becoming
a fertile ground for terrorism."
Air Marshal Houston said it was not known how many insurgents were involved in the firefight.
"The contact went on for quite a long time," he said.
"There was clearly a number of them.
"It was primarily small arms that were used in the contact."

FED: London protests fuel fears of similar action in Australia
CANBERRA, April 7 AAP - Running battles between protesters and British police in London
have fuelled concerns of similar action during the Australian leg of the Olympic torch
relay.
Organisers fears the protests in London will motivate similar action in Canberra when
the Olympic flame passes through the capital city on April 24.
British police battled to keep pro-Tibet demonstrators away from the Beijing Olympics
flame as it passed through London today, arresting 35 protesters who tried to disrupt
the high-security tour.
There were continual scuffles along the route as each member of the relay team of renowned
British athletes, pop stars and television personalities handed over the flame to the
next runner.
Two demonstrators against China's crackdown in Tibet were arrested as they attempted
to extinguish the torch and a third was pushed to the ground as he tried to seize the
flame from a British television presenter taking part in the relay.
It is estimated that more than 1,000 demonstrators turned out.
The Canberra relay task force chairman, Ted Quinlan, says he fears the protests seen
in London could spark a "rolling and growing movement" where demonstrators seek to outdo
each other in terms of catching the limelight.
"My concern is that by the time it gets here, there have been a whole series of protests
and that's really all everybody is expecting for the day," he told ABC Radio.
Mr Quinlan said he hoped the action in London would turn out to be atypical and that
the Canberra leg instead promoted the positive side of the Olympic spirit.
Local authorities would remain on guard for the possibility of similar demonstrations.
"We certainly want to push the positive side but we've got to be ever conscious of
the security considerations of this and we have been," Mr Quinlan said.
"Of course, we're observing what's happening world-wide day by day and making appropriate plans."

Philadelphia Suburban Corporation Reports Record First Quarter Earnings; Net income up 27.7 percent.
Business Editors
BRYN MAWR, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 2, 2001
Philadelphia Suburban Corporation (NYSE:PSC) today reported record net income and earnings per share for the quarter ended March 31, 2001.
Net income available to common stock in the first quarter grew 27.7 percent to $13.1 million versus 2000's first quarter net income of $10.2 million. For the quarter, operating revenues increased to $70.2 million versus the $64.2 million reported in 2000.
Higher revenues from water sales, due to rate relief and continued customer growth, coupled with ongoing cost containment efforts and the success of the company's asset reallocation strategy largely impacted results for the quarter.
Diluted net income per common share for the quarter increased 20 percent to $.24 versus $.20 in 2000, on three million, or 5.9 percent, more shares outstanding.
According to PSC Chairman and President Nicholas DeBenedictis, "The company's growth through acquisition strategy continues to produce customer growth, higher revenues and net income, while our conversion of land holdings to cash is also contributing to our earnings. We recorded a $1.7 million after-tax gain from a land sale during the quarter consistent with the land disposition strategy announced more than a year ago."
In January 2001, PSC sold 31 acres of land, for $3.5 million, that will become part of a 40-home, high-end senior living development, and will produce water sale revenues well into the future. Proceeds will be used for the company's infrastructure rehabilitation program, eliminating the need to go to the capital market for these funds.
Absent the impacts from gains on land sales and the sale of securities (gains on sale of other assets), earnings from operations increased 16.7 percent to $.21 per dilutive share versus $.18 in 2000.
Operations and maintenance expenses as a percentage of revenue (ratio) continued to decrease, representing only 36.8 percent for the 12 months ended March 31, 2001, versus 38.5 percent for the 12 months ended March 31, 2000. These results indicate that the company's cost containment program continues to be effective.
The company's growth-through-acquisition strategy continues to produce positive results. Customer growth for the 12 months ended March 31, 2001 is approximately 4.7 percent. PSC began operations in its newest state -- North Carolina -- in December 2000 with the purchase of MidSouth Utilities, Inc.
In January 2001, the company announced the purchase of Hydraulics, Ltd., of Greensboro, North Carolina, which more than doubled its presence in one of the fastest growing states in the country.
The company's purchase of Media Borough wastewater system in Delaware County, Pennsylvania during the quarter ended March 31, 2001, significantly increased the customer base of the company's expanding Pennsylvania wastewater utility operation. "The Media wastewater acquisition is another example of our ability to purchase municipally-owned systems," said DeBenedictis. Following are the primary growth ventures announced so far this year:
1. Purchase of Hydraulics, Ltd. of Greensboro, North Carolina, a
public water utility serving 16,000 residents in 22 counties
surrounding the towns of Greensboro, Hickory, Raleigh, and
Gastonia
2. Expansion of service franchise in Mahoning Township, Lawrence
County, Pennsylvania to serve 1,000 residents
3. Operation and maintenance contract with Greenwich Township, Warren
County, New Jersey serving approximately 450 residents
4. Purchase of Springton Court water system, serving approximately
100 residents in West Brandywine Township, Chester County,
Pennsylvania
5. Purchase of Media Borough wastewater system in Delaware County,
Pennsylvania serving approximately 15,000 residents in Media
Borough and neighboring townships
6. Purchase of Dresher Woods Condominium water system in Upper Dublin
Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania serving approximately
400 residents
PSC is the holding company for regulated public utilities that provide water and wastewater services to approximately two million residents in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, New Jersey, Maine, and North Carolina.
PSC's common shares are traded on both the New York and Philadelphia Stock Exchanges under the ticker symbol "PSC" and has been committed to the preservation and improvement of the environment throughout its history, which spans more than 100 years.
The company's quarterly conference call with analysts will be at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time today. Interested parties may listen to the conference call over the Internet by logging onto www.suburbanwater.com.
The call will be recorded and replayed beginning 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 2, 2001, and will run until 12:00 p.m., Friday, May 4, 2001. The dial-in telephone number for the audio replay is 402/220-9917 (pin number 3342).
The following table shows the comparative operating revenues, net income available to common stock and net income per share for Philadelphia Suburban Corporation for the quarters ended March 31, 2001 and 2000 (in thousands of dollars, except per share amounts):
(Unaudited) Quarter Ended March 31, ---------------------------- 2001 2000 ---- ---- Operating revenues $70,193 $64,208 Net income available to common stock $13,085 $10,246 Net income per common share: Basic $ 0.24 $ 0.20 Diluted $ 0.24 $ 0.20 Average common shares outstanding: Basic 53,952 51,188 Diluted 54,598 51,571

M2 PRESSWIRE-26 January 2000-SCALA BUSINESS SOLUTIONS: Scala announces UK's most advanced WAP business solution (C)1994-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
RDATE:26012000
* Real-time WAP solution redefines corporate interface
London, UK -- Scala Business Solutions, the leading provider of global e-business management solutions, today announces the UK's most advanced WAP-enabled business application, providing crucial backoffice data in real-time to mobile phones. Scala is demonstrating the solution using WAP-enabled mobile phones such as the Nokia 7110, together with its award-winning e-business product line, Scala.Solutions.
With the recent Butler Group prediction that there will be massive growth in mobile commerce through most of the major industry sectors, Scala has made an early entry into the WAP technology arena, identifying the massive potential for businesses to redefine their interface with business partners, staff and customers through WAP.
"While WAP technology is still in its cradle of existence, smart businesses should already be planning a strategy for WAP solutions to gain a competitive advantage," says Brian Davies, managing director for Scala North West Europe.
"The consumer market for WAP technology has arrived, and the business market will not be far behind. Scala is focusing on satisfying the needs of business people who want a pocket phone with which they can access real-time, backoffice information."
Martin Butler, Chairman of Butler Group, identifies Scala's WAP-enabled business application as the most advanced in the industry, and is demonstrating the application to key target business groups. "Scala are one of the first companies to empower mobile business through the development of the most advanced WAP business management solution. Mobile access to backoffice information creates exciting opportunities to revolutionise the way businesses around the world work," says Butler.
The Scala WAP-enabled business application is easy-to-use and cost efficient, allowing staff to be connected to their business management system while they are out of the office or away from their desk.
Backoffice data such as stock availability, order status and customer credit limits can be accessed in real-time from mobile phones and other wireless devices. Mobile staff can also enter business transactions from mobile phones, reducing errors and saving administration time.
The Scala WAP solution can be used in any country where a network operator can provide a signal. Connected to Scala's multi-national e-business application, Scala.Solutions, users get the benefit of real-time collaboration between a Windows-based, multi-cultural backoffice system, Scala Global Series, and Microsoft SQL Server 7.0. Scala is unique in providing a global business solution for over 90 countries and in 30 different languages.
Scala's WAP support is provided by a connection to a WAP application, which typically is installed at the company's servers. This means that the WAP functionality can be used by simply dialing a phone number for the corporate WAP server.
The Scala WAP business application is currently available in beta release and is expected to start shipping as soon as the WAP-enabled phones are on
general release from their manufacturers.

A description of the legal aspects of film distribution, a history of the growth of the market and its current state, the key players, market trends, and growth perspectives are all covered.
Terrestrial Television
Terrestrial television has a longer history and has historically played the central role in the Russian television market. This is due to the fact that it is free to consumers, with the system's main funding coming from the government (from the federal budget) and commercial channels (whose profits come from the sale of advertising).
New Interactive Media Services (Pay-per-View, VoD and FVoD).
This segment of the film production market remains in its early stages. It was in the mid-2000s that the first steps were taken towards creating such a market in Russia. The country now boasts approximately 30 operators of various types providing VoD services using a range of technologies. Most of these companies operate in the Internet services segment (16) and cable television (10 in IPTV), while mobile and satellite services remain less popular for the time being (2 and 1 operators, respectively).

Colorado Springs Is Home to Innovative Brew Pub.(Originated from The Gazette, Colorado Springs, Colo.)
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--May 19--If it looks like a warehouse, and feels like a warehouse, then it must be a warehouse. Or a brew pub.
Taking a page from brewpubs in other cities that have found successful homes in warehouse districts, 2-year-old Palmer Lake Brewing Co. quietly opened its brewpub operation Friday. Simply called The Warehouse, the site is a turn-of-the-century building at 25 W. Cimarron St., south of downtown at Cimarron and Sahwatch streets.
But The Warehouse is far from a typical brewpub. Besides looking to attract beer lovers, owners hope to establish an artists' haven. Three residential lofts and three artist studios are under construction above the brewpub. The project should be completed this summer.
In the basement, owners plan to build 10 music studios where local musicians can hone their skills in high-quality sound rooms. Construction has not begun.
A 4,800-square-foot art gallery shares the ground floor with the brewpub in a site previously used for cold storage. Paintings adorn the rugged red-brick walls, and the rough wood-plank floor is dotted with comfortable sofas and chairs, inviting patrons to sit and talk while enjoying Palmer Lake's brews.
"We want to have an active art-community presence," said Perrin James Cunningham, a restaurant consultant for Palmer Lake Brewing. "And we want to enhance that with the beer as well -- with the art of brewing."
After all, it's the beer that opened the door to The Warehouse. Kurt Schoen founded Palmer Lake Brewing in the garage of his home two summers ago, and the company has been growing ever since. The brewery moved to the Cimarron building last year, where three full-time brewers use a gravity system of brewing that takes up parts of three floors.
The middle step of that process can be seen from the brewpub, which holds about 120 people. Dark wood and red brick dominate the room, and both the bar and all the tables are topped with distinctive sheets of copper.
And besides Palmer Lake's four different beers, The Warehouse will serve atypical pub dining fare. Characterized by executive chef Brian Crowell as "a good blend of Colorado game, Iowa choice beef and pork, and a touch of New Orleans," most dinners range from $10 to $20.
Owners hope the influence of working artists will draw people to The Warehouse.
"We're trying to make this part of the entire building experience," Cunningham said of the brewpub. "We wanted to make it a friendly, unpretentious place to be."

Former Cold Stone Creamery CEO Leverages Retail and Brand Expertise to Grow Online Home Movie Sharing Company into a National Brand
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- iMemories, the exclusive Internet-based destination for preserving, customizing and sharing home movie collections, today announced that former Cold Stone Creamery CEO Doug Ducey has become the lead investor in the company's latest round of financing, and will serve as Chairman of the Board. Ducey joins iMemories to help lead the company's national expansion.
Founded in 2006, iMemories is now the first company to integrate digital conversion of family films and videotapes with seamless online sharing, director-style editing and storage capabilities. When I used iMemories and was able to watch and share family home movies that were all but forgotten, I knew the service and experience had tremendous potential to catch fire with consumers."
Prior to joining iMemories, Ducey served as CEO of Cold Stone Creamery from 1995 through 2007. During his tenure, Ducey grew the ice cream brand from a single store in Arizona to more than 1,400 stores worldwide serving millions. In May 2007, Ducey and Cold Stone Creamery founder Don Sutherland merged the company with Kahala Corp. Prior to Cold Stone, Ducey served in sales and marketing executive positions with Anheuser-Busch and Procter & Gamble.
To date, iMemories has transformed more than 100,000 personal home movie films, camcorder videos, photos and slides into studio quality, professionally packaged DVDs or Blue-ray Discs. By providing custom scene indexes and interactive online menus, iMemories is the only digital conversion provider that allows consumers to easily identify, organize and customize home movies without having to upload and edit their own content.
"Doug's proven ability to build a successful high growth consumer brand with Cold Stone Creamery will be a tremendous asset to iMemories as we roll out nationally," said Mark Rukavina, Founder and CEO of iMemories. "Over the last two years, iMemories created and designed advanced technology that allows families to preserve, organize and share digitally re-mastered home movies with loved ones and friends online. Oct. 20--I've had an opportunity to do a lot of thinking about ethics lately after being invited to speak on the subject.
Ethics is defined in the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language as "the rules or standards governing the conduct of members of a profession."
I like that definition. For members of the journalism profession the primary governing standards are, in my opinion, honesty, integrity and fairness. Editors or reporters who don't have those qualities really don't have much.
I then turned to a college textbook -- 1976 vintage, written after Watergate -- and discovered that a lot of what is in that book today is still relevant. Ethics, perhaps, never goes out of style.
The book, "The Messenger's Motives: Ethical Problems of the News Media," is one I have read more than once. It is one of the very few books I bothered to keep from college.
As I reread the book, it was clear the same problems that vexed editors in 1976 are doing the same thing in 2006. Only now some of the problems facing newspaper editors have to do with the Internet and other forms of technology including video productions on the Web.
Some people believe newsrooms operate with few rules and no principles. The few rules part I can plead guilty to, but there are highly principled people at the Herald & Review and countless other newsrooms who think before they act.
Ethics is in the eye of the beholder, but I think the most common problem that arises in our newsroom involves small gifts. If a reporter writes a story about a prize-winning cook and she delivers a smorgasbord of goodies to the newsroom, it's hard to turn it down without sounding ungracious. Instead of keeping it for personal consumption, the custom is to make it available to everyone.
We've had occasions where a local business owner gave us several sacks of goodies -- most of the items were nonperishable. In these instances, some items were kept, but the majority was donated to an agency that served clientele who might enjoy an extra treat.
We also get a good supply of free stuff without asking. The number of CDs, books, T-shirts and other assorted freebies we receive is astounding. The solution we have come up with to deal with freebies is to have a newspaper-wide silent auction.
The items are sorted, marked and laid out on a table in the lunchroom. People come by and put in their bids. The auctions run for about a week and when it is done, the people who submitted winning bids pay for their items. The cash raised -- an auction can raise anywhere from $150 to $500, depending on the quality of the merchandise -- is donated to a local charity.
Reporters do worry about getting free stuff. They turn down offers for drinks or a meal because they don't want to appear as if they can be bought. My feeling is that if they are offered a sandwich or a soft drink, they should feel free to accept.
Your ethical standards are pretty low if you can be bought off with a ham sandwich.
While we don't have a formal code of ethics, reporters and editors know the basics. Ethics is a topic that is discussed directly or indirectly every single day.
And as new situations come up, we try to keep in mind what is fair and right. I firmly believe that journalists who strive to be ethical stay out of trouble.

Google mash-ups can help consumers find their way.

Aug. 13--Sitting in his hotel room in Bangkok, Mike Pegg struggled for words to explain the significance of the Google maps phenomenon.
"It's huge," he marveled. "I don't even think people understand. This is going to change every..."
He trailed off.
"It's completely transforming how information is presented."
Mr. Pegg, a 28-year-old computer programmer from Waterloo, Ont., is the chief scribe of the growing trend of Google map mash-ups, which make it easy to find the cheapest gas, the nearest cell phone tower, or the hottest date in cities all over the country, including Toledo.
With a few lines of programming language, a generation of 20-something computer programmers are ushering in a new way to display information on the Internet.
When Google first released its mapping program six months ago, a group of Mapquest devotees began switching teams, pledging allegiance to the information giant's simple interface and satellite images of any neighborhood in the world.
Meanwhile, computer hackers were hard at work trying to crack the code that would allow them to meld maps with printed data from other Web pages.
Last month, Google made that task considerably more simple, moving Google map hacking into a much easier to understand realm. By releasing its application programming interface, Google's executives effectively put the stamp of approval on a fleet of Web sites that combine online maps with information that ranges from phone books to real estate listings to personal ads.
"This is stuff that doesn't take a whole lot of computing power, but it's allowing programmers to be creative," said Joshua Fraser, a 21-year-old Clemson University student who created a type of reverse-phone book using Google's mapping capacity.
Microsoft and Yahoo have similar mapping sites, but only a handful of individual programmers are forgoing Google's offerings. Several hackers online and in interviews with The Blade cited the simple interface, intuitive layout, and powerful search functions behind Google's maps -- and those satellite images are pretty cool, too.
One of the original Google map mash-ups, a real estate guide, has also served as a template for many of the newer sites. Its creator, Paul Rademacher, combined real estate postings from the popular for-sale site Craig's List with maps of three dozen cities nationwide.
Listings are displayed with brightly-colored push pins on a city map, and clicking on a push pin brings up an address, price, and photo of the house or apartment.
Now Mr. Pegg, who created a catalog of all the map mash-ups in cyberspace, is having trouble keeping up. Since Google released the code to its site in early July, hundreds of mash-ups have appeared on the Internet.
Mr. Rademacher's site does not cover Toledo -- yet -- but scores of other sites reach even small towns. One of the most useful plots the least expensive gas in a given city.
"You mean that updates all the time?" asked Toledo resident Mark Miller as he looked at the gas mash-up on a wireless Internet connection while paying $2.39 a gallon at a station on Monroe Avenue. "I should check it before I go to work, and then I can find a station between my house and my office."
On Mr. Fraser's site, visitors can type in a street name and get the name, address, and phone number of anyone who lives there. The senior computer science major at Clemson in South Carolina created the site as a project to learn how the Google interface works.
Mr. Fraser has not publicized his site by any method other than word of mouth, but thousands of people visit each day. He just purchased his own domain name so he can move the database off the Clemson server.
"Right now I'm limited in how much I can grow," he said. "Clemson's site will freeze up if I get too many more hits."
Some of the mash-ups are more whimsical than practical. Jeff Marshall combined the popular personal ad site hotornot.com with a Google map to facilitate people finding their dream dates right around the corner.
Other mashups include:
--A map of wireless phone towers separated by service provider, complete with reviews of cell phone strength on specific street corners
--A database of restaurants that can be listed by type of food as well as zip code
--A jogging route planner that allows a visitor to draw the exact route he wishes to run and calculate the distance traveled
--A map of the hometowns of every soldier killed in the Iraq war
Since sanctioned Google map hacking is still in its infancy, some of the most pioneering sites are limited to the city in which the creator resides. Adrian Holovaty, a 24-year-old programmer in Chicago, linked the Chicago Police Department's crime log with a map that shows the locations of the most recent crimes.
A few weeks ago, Mr. Holovaty was hired into the newly created editor of editorial innovations position at The Washington Post. He will remain in Chicago but will develop new technologies -- many of which will involve map mash-ups -- for the Post's Web site.
"I was looking for a fun side project that would give me a good challenge and help the community at the same time," Mr. Holovaty said. "I ran across the Chicago Police Department's Citizen ICAM Web site, which includes raw crime-report data, and I saw an opportunity there."
Mr. Holovaty, like many of the programmers that have created mash-ups, is eager to talk about hacking Google maps as the future of the Internet.
"Releasing the free map [interface] was a monumental move on Google's part," he said. "Practically overnight, putting a simple map on a Web page turned from an expensive, laborious ordeal to an accessible, easy task."
Though the mash-ups are almost exclusively created by individuals for free use, the concept could have billions of dollars worth of impact on the form taken by web-based advertising. Ads for specific companies could be plugged into the maps as highlighted push pins based on search results, programmers said.
And when the advertising dollars begin to flow, the wave of the mapping phenomenon may begin to crest. Releasing the interface, Mr. Pegg said, is a step in transforming the Internet to provide information in more interactive ways.
"In the place that the Internet's at right now, we're bound to use what we know as Web sites," he said.
Technology blogs are abuzz with chatter about the potential for mapping mash-ups. The first annual Where 2.0 conference, sponsored by technology publishing company O'Reilly Media, brought dozens of speakers to San Francisco in June to discuss applications of mapping technology.
For example, the global positioning system used by Google Earth, a satellite image program that runs off a computer desktop, is being used to track objects on the move. A bus fleet in Denver added a GPS monitor to each vehicle that provides central dispatch with a constant stream of images of its buses driving around town.
"We could even go to the extent of putting them on kids," Mr. Pegg said.
